What Causes Migraines - Some Common Causes Of Migraines
Three times as many women suffer from migraine headaches as men. Currently, it is not very clear as to what causes migraines. But we know of one thing. Research has shown that migraine symptoms may arise because the diameter of blood vessels in the head changes. They first contract, and then, as the pain begins, they expand. What is not clear is the reason why this occur in the first place.
There is a theory that they might be caused by an imbalance of the mood-regulating chemical serotonin and hormone fluctuations are also thought to be a factor. Many physicians believe that the tendency towards migraine headaches may run in families. Whatever the cause they can be very debilitating. The pain is intense and may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and vision disturbances. Some people experience an aura such as bright points of lights, zig zag patterns, or blind spots prior to an attack. It is not as common, but some people also report strange odors and numbness in the limbs.
There are some common triggers that may bring on a migraine. These include certain foods such as MSG, chocolate, cheese, and red wine. Stress and changes in the normal routine may also be triggers. Poor diet, lack of sleep, and exposure to strong odors can also bring on an episode.
My mother had migraines and I had them for a few years when I was under a lot of stress. Hers sent her to bed. I found that if I could lie down in a dark, quiet place when they first started, they did not last long and I would not experience the nausea. My aunt had them and spent several days in bed just about every month. She called them "sick headaches." I can say that I am pretty sure mine were totally stress induced. On the other hand, a good friend found that her fondness for dark chocolate would invariably bring on such a blinding headache that she gave it up entirely. She said as much as she enjoyed it, the resulting pain was not worth the momentary pleasure.
Most migraines do not respond to aspirin or acetaminophen. NSAID’s like Aleve are a bit more effective and there are some over the counter migraine medications that may help. Some doctors believe the herb feverfew may prevent some migraines, but often prescription medication is required and some of those may be taken as a preventative measure along with lifestyle changes and avoiding triggers. While we are still not entirely sure what causes migraines, they can be treated.
